The abuse, misuse, or dependence on substances such as drugs and alcohol produce detrimental effects and consequences for individuals, families, and society as a whole. Alcohol abuse, in particular, is a growing problem in Zambia. It can lead to health problems such as liver disease. It can cause a person to engage in risky behaviors such as unprotected sex and driving while intoxicated. It diminishes a person's ability to make informed and level-headed decisions about his or her life. The 990 Talkline has trained counselors on duty at all times who are prepared to help those dealing with substance abuse issues in their lives with information, counseling, and referral services.
